Barefooted I waited

On the cliff’s

Fried boulder

Wincing at the ache

Of raw flesh sizzling

To overpower heart’s

Dull silence

In the wake of its other half’s

Each day I cut off

A new layer of skin

Letting it slither and dry

Until the sun

Had bleached it

Feeding it to

Shredded time,

From firm flesh to gnawed veins

The meat decayed

Salted by the water’s

Foamy embrace;

Rotting emotion melting bone

And numbing vulnerability

Claiming it as

Its own,

Each night the water

Took me

Its cool touch

A remedy

To the fever

You’ve instilled

In me.
